To Be Or Not To Be The Best GPS The Garmin Nuvi 660.

6 June 2009 39 views No Comment

Garmin Nuvi 660 is arguably the best GPS navigator product on the market. The only reason you may want to hold off a purchase is to wait until they make these devices thinner and lighter so you can carry one easily in your pocket when you take out of your car. The device is coming with a Garmin Nuvi Lock in order to prevent theft and this feature disables the unit to perform any functions. If you want to regain its functionality, you have to enter a specific 4-digit Pin or you can take the unit to a previously decided location.

Directions for reaching a nominated destination are clearly overlaid on the display and are also provided as voice prompts. If you make a wrong turn the system will calculate the necessary directions to get you back on track. Directions are given visually on the map with arrows, written at the bottom of the screen using distance, direction, and street name, and audibly with a voice reading it out. The voice can be played through your car audio with the FM transmitter so it is louder.

Voice guided directions are automatically muted during incoming calls. There are also options to send text messages, synchronize your phone’s address book and call log, and dial by voice, but these features aren’t supported with all mobiles. Voice Recognition programming is a big safety benefit for any GPS system. Without a helpful passenger, a driver trying to program a system by hand while driving is a big safety concern because of the distraction from driving.

GPS companies seldom discuss their mapping data in detail, but this is the heart of the navigation system along with the manufacturer’s routing engine. It is the routing engine that ultimately makes the route decisions, using the mapping data and other variables programmed into it. GPS coordinates are easy to miss type. Using the Waypoint Tool in Expert GPS to create new Waypoints reduces the chances of making a mistake when manually entering coordinates on your GPS.
